Marrakech Highlights: What Not to Miss in the Red City
Marrakech was the first city I visited in Morocco, and it’s the one I have spent the most time in consistently each visit. Although I love visiting the coast, Marrakech is definitely one of my favorites because it is such a vibrant city – both day and night. Experiencing the energy of Jemaa el-Fnaa, wandering through the colorful souks, and soaking in Marrakech’s lively nightlife never gets old.Β
The first thing that struck me about Marrakech was the crazy traffic! The roads are pure chaos but somehow it works. It’s a bit surreal to witness expensive sports cars sharing the roads with mules and families piled onto small motorbikes, all flowing through traffic circles with no clear lanes. If you’re renting a car, be prepared to be stressed!Β

I’ve had the benefit of having my in-laws as my own personal tour guides (and hagglers!) so it’s been amazing to be shown all the best places by true locals. Based on my experience, these are the top highlights when visiting Marrakech.

Medina
Marrakech’s Medina is the walled historic district with winding maze-like alleyways, which was founded between 1070-1072. Marrakech’s Medina was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1985.Β This is an absolute must-see when visiting the city, containing many of the key attractions including the Koutoubia Mosque, Ben Youssef Madrasa, and Jemaa el-Fnaa square.Β
The medina is massive, covering 19 kilometers. Throughout the winding alleys, you will find endless souks and vendors selling hand crafted goods. You may see artisans at work, highlighting Morocco’s rich history of craftmanship. Browsing and wandering throughout is all part of the experience (as is haggling if you plan to buy something in the souks).Β
If you’re visiting in hotter seasons, it’s better to visit either early morning or evening time. It’s mainly a pedestrian area but keep an eye out for motorbikes even in the small alleyways! You should bring cash (Moroccan dirhams) and don’t feel pressured to buy the first items you see. Check out my post on Place Jemaa el-Fnaa and the Medina for more tips on exploring this area.Β
Jemaa el-Fnaa
Jemaa el-Fnaa is the large open square inside the Medina. My in-laws always told me that the real Marrakech experience is visiting Jemma el-Fnaa at night time when it is full of performers. I agree it is a completely different experience at night, but it can be a great starting point for exploring the souks during the day too.
There are many cafes around the square as well as vendors selling fresh juice in the middle. In an older season of Amazing Race, one of their challenges in Marrakech was to carry out these large fruit stands and set it up for a local vendor!
I am personally petrified of snakes, so my in-laws warned me in advance of the snake charmers in the square. I’d avoid walking close or making eye contact if passing near them if you don’t like snakes (the square is huge – it’s actually easy to miss them). They will expect a tip if you take a photo, so be prepared. I’ve also read accounts of the snake charmers putting snakes on tourists until they give a cash tip.
Koutoubia Minaret
The Koutoubia Minaret is one of the most recognizable landmarks in Marrakech. Built in the 12th century, the tower is an example of Almohad architecture. Non-Muslim visitors can’t enter the mosque, but you can walk through the surrounding gardens and take in a stunning sunset here. It’s not far from Jemaa el-Fnaa so you can easily stop by on the way.
Ben Youssef Madrasa
In the heart of the medina, Ben Youssef Madrasa is a beautiful historic site to visit. It was once the largest Islamic school in North Africa. The Moroccan craftmanship is on full display here with intricate tilework and carved wood. It also has a beautiful courtyard!
Dar El Bacha Museum
Dar El Bacha is a palace built in the early 20th century featuring elegant courtyards and iconic zellige tilework showcasing traditional Moroccan architecture. Visit the Museum of Confluences in Dar El Bacha to see art and cultural exhibits.
Menara Gardens
Just outside of the busy streets of the Medina, the Menara Gardens are a quieter area where locals often picnic. On a clear day, you can see beautiful views of the Atlas Mountains in the distance. These gardens were established in the 12th century and have a large reflecting pool in the center surrounded by olive groves.Β
When I visited this area, there were groups of locals singing and playing music throughout. It was a fun place to experience local Marrakchi culture. Entrance to the pavilion is free for locals, but there is a small fee for visitors.Β
Jardin Majorelle
If visiting for a few days, Jardin Majorelle is worth a visit! Check out my post about visiting this iconic garden for more information.
Nightlife
Marrakech is vibrant during the day, but it really comes alive at night. As I mentioned earlier, Place Jemaa el-Fnaa is well worth a visit during the night when it is full of performers and games. Marrakech is also very well-known for it’s amazing bars and clubs. Places are open LATE – I was out so late my first night in Marrakech that we heard the morning prayers when we returned to the hotel! Morocco takes entertainment seriously – it seems that every bar or club has live performances whether it’s a live band, dancers, or flame throwers.Β
Agafay Desert Day Trip
If you have extra time in Marrakech, Agafay is an easy day trip from the city and offers a great way to experience Morocco’s desert landscapes without traveling all the way to the Sahara. I’ve gone a few times with my in-laws and the drive is quite scenic as well. There are a lot of tour companies which offer camel rides and ATV rides in this area.Β
It’s difficult to summarize such an iconic city and do it justice. Marrakech offers such a mix of relaxing and chaotic experiences, with so much to see both day and night. I think this city is a great introduction to Morocco if visiting for the first time!
