Avignon, France: A Guide to the City of Popes
When my mom visited me while I was studying in Paris, we wanted to explore another region. Avignon seemed like a great destination to check out and it was easy to travel there by train! I included Avignon in my post about the perfect Southern France itinerary because it is an easy addition to any trip through Provence or to the French Riviera.
Known as the “City of Popes”, Avignon is a medieval city situated along the Rhône River. It’s a walkable city with rich history, iconic landmarks, and a charming old town.

Below are my top highlights of the medieval city:
Ramparts
Most notable to me when we arriving were the medieval ramparts encircling the historic old town. The limestone ramparts were built in the 14th century to protect the papal city and are impressively preserved. You can walk the 5km perimeter around the outside. Some sections and gates are also accessible (including an area next o Avignon Centre train station).
Palais des Papes
The Palais des Papes (Palace of the Popes) is Avignon’s most famous landmark and one of the largest Gothic palaces in Europe. Avignon became the center of the Catholic Church in the 14th century when several popes lived there instead of Rome. You can learn more about the history of the Avignon Papacy and see the impressive architecture by touring the palace.
Pont d'Avignon
Sing it with me! Sur le Pont d’Avignon! On y danse on y danse!
Pont Saint-Bénézet, better known as Pont d’Avignon was known to me from singing the classic French nursery rhyme in my French classes. I was tickled to see the bridge in real life! Only four arches remain from the original bridge spanning the full river, built in the 12th century.
Place d'Horlage
Located in the heart of Avignon’s old town, Place de l’Horloge is a lively square surrounded by cafes, restaurants, and historic buildings. It’s also home to Avignon’s city hall and opera house. This is a great place to enjoy outdoor dining and take in the atmosphere of the city!
Rocher des Doms
For some of the best views in Avignon, head to the Rocher des Doms. This hilltop garden sits above the Rhône River and offers panoramic views of the city, Palais des Papes, the Pont d’Avignon, and the surrounding countryside. It’s a peaceful place to enjoy a scenic walk or picnic.
Old Town
One of the best things to do in Avignon is simply wandering through the charming old town. Inside the medieval walls, you’ll find narrow cobblestone streets, historic buildings, and hidden squares. This area really boasts the character and charm that make Avignon such a memorable city.
Day Trip to Nîmes
If you have an extra day in Provence, Nîmes is an easy day trip from Avignon. Nîmes is well known for its preserved Roman monuments and is close to Pont du Gard, the tallest surviving Roman aqueduct bridge.
Avignon is a city where history comes to life, from its medieval ramparts to the impressive Palais des Papes to the charming streets and views of the Rhône River. Whether exploring Provence by car or adding a stop to a southern France itinerary, Avignon is a destination well worth the visit.
Its central location also makes it a great base for exploring more of the region, like Nîmes, vineyards in the Rhône valley, and the famous Pont du Gard.
Keep an eye out for my next post where I’ll be sharing about taking a day trip to Pont du Gard!
