Day Trip from Paris: Visiting Versailles
Less than an hour train ride from Paris, Versailles is an easy pick for an iconic day trip. The former royal residence offers stunning architecture, expansive gardens, and a fascinating glimpse into French history.
I first visited Versailles as part of my summer study abroad program in Paris, but I’ve since returned on my own and even brought my family during their visit. While organized tours can be convenient, I found that visiting independently is surprisingly easy thanks to the direct train connection from Paris.Β
In this guide, I’ll cover how to get there, what to see, and tips to help you make the most of your day.

Versailles is one of the most famous palaces in the world and offers a fascinating glimpse into the lives of French royalty. What began as a modest hunting lodge was transformed into a lavish royal residence by King Louis XIV, better known as the “Sun King.” Determined to showcase the power and prestige of France, Louis XIV expanded Versailles into an enormous palace surrounded by magnificent gardens and made it the center of political life in France.
For more than a century, Versailles served as the primary residence of the French monarchy. As you walk through the palace’s ornate state apartments, the dazzling Hall of Mirrors, and the sprawling gardens, it’s easy to imagine the extravagant court life that once took place here. The palace also played a significant role in French history, remaining a symbol of royal wealth and power until the French Revolution.
Today, Versailles is one of the most popular day trips from Paris, attracting visitors from around the world. Whether you’re interested in history, architecture, or simply beautiful places, it’s easy to see why Versailles continues to be one of France’s most iconic landmarks.
How to Get There
The easiest option is to take the RER C train from Paris to Versailles ChΓ’teauβRive Gauche station. Depending on where you’re staying in Paris, the journey typically takes around 40 minutes. From the station, it’s about a 10-minute walk to the palace entrance, with plenty of signs directing visitors along the way.
If you’re visiting during peak travel season, I recommend arriving as early as possible. Versailles is one of France’s most popular attractions, and security lines can become quite long later in the morning.
Purchasing Tickets
To save time, purchase your tickets online in advance and reserve a timed entry slot. This will help you avoid waiting in the ticket line upon arrival and ensure entry during your preferred time.
If you plan to explore more than just the palace, consider purchasing the Passport Ticket. This option includes access to the palace, gardens, Trianon Estate, and other areas of the Versailles grounds. During certain times of the year, the gardens also host Musical Gardens and Musical Fountain Shows, which may require a special ticket or be included with the Passport Ticket.
I recommend setting aside a full day for your visit. Between the palace, gardens, Grand Trianon, Petit Trianon, and Queen’s Hamlet, there’s far more to see than many first-time visitors expect.
Palace Highlights
Walking through the Palace of Versailles, it’s hard not to be awestruck by the elaborate rooms and sense of grandeur. Β
The highlight for most visitors is the Hall of Mirrors. This iconic gallery stretches dramatically along the palace, with floor-to-ceiling mirrors reflecting natural light from the garden-facing windows. Itβs both beautiful and historically significant, once used for royal ceremonies and receptions and later the site of the signing of the Treaty of Versailles in 1919.
Just as impressive are the Kingβs State Apartments, a series of richly decorated rooms used by Louis XIV and later French monarchs for official duties and court life. Walking through these spaces gives you a glimpse into the strict formality and daily rituals of the royal court, where every detail was designed to project power and control.
Although it can be crowded (this is a popular destination!), it is really crazy to take in all the ornate details.
Gardens
The gardens at Versailles are almost as iconic as the palace itself, where the scale and ambition of the Sun King really come to life. Designed in the classic jardin à la française style, everything here feels intentional, structured, and grand.
The gardens are so big, each time I visited I had a completely different experience! Fountains are one of the highlights of the gardens, each one decorated with mythological figures and intricate details that reflect the power and storytelling of the era.Β
During my first visit, I was so tickled to stumble upon a dancing fountain! If youβre visiting during warmer months, itβs worth checking the schedule for the Musical Fountains Shows. On select days, the fountains are set to music, which can make exploring the gardens more lively.Β
Grand Trianon & Petit Trianon
A short walk (or tram ride) from the main palace brings you to a completely different side of Versailles. The Grand Trianon was built as a more private retreat for Louis XIV, offering a lighter, more relaxed escape from the formality of court life. With its pink marble columns, open galleries, and elegant symmetry, it feels far more intimate than the main palace while still unmistakably royal.
Nearby, the Petit Trianon is best known for its association with Marie Antoinette, who used it as her personal sanctuary. The house itself is small and refined, but itβs the surrounding gardens and English-style landscape that really stand outβmeandering paths, wildflower plantings, and a softer, more natural design compared to the formality of the main grounds. Itβs easy to see why she retreated here; it feels worlds away from the grandeur and scrutiny of the palace.
Marie Antoinetteβs Estate (The Queenβs Hamlet)
A little further beyond the Petit Trianon lies one of the most surprising parts of Versailles: Marie Antoinetteβs Estate, including the Hameau de la Reine. Designed as a rustic retreat, this area was created to feel like a simple country village complete with thatched cottages, a small lake, and gardens that feel intentionally wild and unstructured compared to the formality of the palace grounds.
Itβs easy to forget youβre still on royal property here. The atmosphere is quiet and almost storybook-like, and it offers a very different perspective on court lifeβless about power and ceremony, and more about escape and imagination.
A day trip to Versailles is one of those experiences that feels almost impossible to fully take in, even with a full day. Between the ornate interiors of the palace, the sweeping gardens, and the quieter corners like the Trianons, thereβs a constant shift between grandeur and calm that makes the visit so memorable.
